Dec/ Jan update!

Collecting marine life, stones and such things for analysis in our classroom.

Our Winter/ Spring explorations - could we be happier to be out of the classroom?!!!!

And here we are taking part and doing out own science experiments. Testing for starch in many items, testing various things for acid/bases and learning about the various types of energy e.g. static.

January/ February activities!

In the last couple of months we've done so much so here's a few snippets of such!  We had a boxer from London in to show us the many skilled ways of skipping and we've been skipping since! :)

We had a visit from Macnas and our class was the first class chosen to welcome the "boy explorer" to the school with our painted stones which guided him into the school. We created poems and ideas to help him with his lost imagination on how to make Ireland a better place to live. Lets hope he makes it to Dublin safely!

January 2010

This month we have been performing SESE experiments, art work and lots of investigations based on weather, on water all around the Arctic and Antartica. We know lots about the climate, animals found in both places and where they are located..just ask us!
We've also been exploring procedural writing, we are writing instructions for everything..even for making a cup of tea, making snowmen and St. Brigid's crosses!

Art, SESE and Other activties in first class 09

We've had a great few weeks being back to school and have settled in well to first class. Here are some experiments that fun subjects that we have been doing in school of late.

Here the girls are decorating their Autumnal Scarecrows - they can say a poem aboout him too if
you ask!

Here we are busy making our paper helicopters and tested them how well they fly - indoors and outdoors. We experimented with design and used paper clips on the bottom of them as weights to help them fly better.

We also did a number of experiments on balance...we learned a new word called 'gravity' today!

We also looked some dancing raisins - the air (carbon) bubbles helped the raisins to bounce up and down, ask us how it works - we can tell you all about it!

Caterpillar and butterflies

We have been learning about the butterfly lifecycle recently and have made lots of interesting things based on this. One thing we made was a wheel which we created by cutting and pasting the stages of the lifecycle in order and then fixing on the cover so that we can talk about each stage individually. We decorated them then and brought them home to show our families!Align Center

Here below is a picture of the pupae that are left before they turned into.....

Boat making - Volvo Ocean Race yachts!!

In anticipation of the Volvo Ocean race we created our very own boats! We'd great fun trying to see which ones floated best and how if we blew the sails it would move faster! We investigated many materials to see whether they would float or sink. First we predicted what would happen and then we tested them and recorded our results..which were sometimes surprising!

We also voted on our favourite type of boat/ships and recorded our results using a pictograph. The winner with 9 votes was the speed boat!

In art this week we painted our own pictures of what we think the boats will look like in the Volvo ocean race - looks like they'll be very colourful! :)
